For the love of the beach

We didn’t go “down the shore”…. we went to “the beach.” And don’t get my sister started on MTV’s Jersey Shore. No, seriously, don’t. People have different thoughts on the shore vs. beach and even what part they have in mind. The NJ coastline is quite unique. For me it means Long Beach Island. Although Pt. Pleasant and the boardwalk are a close second. Pt. Pleasant is easier and quicker to describe so let’s start there. It means rides, the train, my grandparents and ice cream. My childhood day trips.

Then there’s Long Beach Island, LBI. I can’t remember how old I was the first time we rented a house for a week at the beach. I can remember however a few of the different houses we rented. The cape where my cousin Andy thought he could fly and must have jumped down the steps 100 times. The one close enough to the General Store where I’d walk in the morning with my Dad and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. The beige one on “stilts” with the bedrooms downstairs and the living room/kitchen upstairs. “Reverse living”… I was obsessed. The one with the kids that lived next door whose dad played football and we were allowed to play out in the street during the rain with our umbrellas huddled. Then our dream- our OWN house at the beach. I was in high school. We spent a couple weeks at the house and rented it out the rest of the summer. Torture. And then, ours, all OURS! And for the past 9 years my parents have called it home year round.

Thanksgiving in the tiny kitchen of our blue cape. Washing dishes with my sister and cousins. Football on the beach. Blinking lights. Easter sunrise mass on the beach. Chowderfest. Sur La Plage. The best place to work with some of the best girls and still my oldest friends to date. Sev, coffee, big gulps, Combos, 80’s music. Back then we saw each other go through boyfriends, break-ups, angry customers, and now weddings, babies, heartbreak and hope. Those girls are part of my heart. This island is part of my heart. It’s heard my laughter and seen my tears. You might not “get it” but if you know me and you don’t get it, well I always do my best to make you get it. So be prepared.

I’m eager, as many are, to get back. To help fix it. To bring it back so my girls, my nieces and nephew, and the babies that my “plagies” will hopefully have some day can share our heart and make their own memories.

Stay tuned here and on my facebook page  for ways to help and how my business and others are joining together to give back to our island.

A day in the life – August edition

This is my second ‘A day in the life’ blog post, the first you can see here. Just a glimpse into what I do and what I see. My girls certainly keep me on my toes.. and this wasn’t even the WHOLE day this time!

Carolyn & Chris – The Inn at Fernbrook

Question: How can you tell you absolutely love what you do?

Answer: You’ll do it with a smile on your face … one that grows as the hours go by… even when it’s 100+  degrees outside.

Carolyn and Chris were married during the heat wave on the last Saturday of June. I felt like a sweaty mess as I walked into the main house at The Inn at Fernbrook Farms with Carolyn’s maid of honor, Jenn. As we walked upstairs to where Carolyn was getting ready I had a good idea she wouldn’t be one of those nervous, hand wringing brides. (not that there’s anything wrong with that, I was!!) But Carolyn was beyond chill! I noticed though, her bridesmaids weren’t quite keeping up with the the easy- going feeling of the bride-to-be. Not because of nerves, but their emotions. I quickly realized Carolyn is much like me, the tears stay inside, she’s a tough one to crack. I listened to their inside jokes to stop the tears and they made me smile .. and then I joined in. The perfect start to the day…

One of my favorite moments of the evening was watching the “winner” of the Anniversary dance cheer for their 62 years together. Love.

A gorgeous venue and a couple so in love… yes, I love what I do.

Thank you Carolyn and Chris for choosing me to document your wedding day. It was beautiful to watch you and your guests celebrate.

Oh! Baby O!

I had the great opportunity to photograph the baby shower of a fellow photographer friend a couple weeks ago, and in one of my favorite places, Spring Lake!

Kristy of  Kristy O Photography and “Baby O” were showered with gifts and yummy food and surrounded by a great group of women. Kristy’s friends were warm and welcoming and kept me laughing all afternoon.

Special thanks to Ari, Kristy’s friend who had me come to the shower. I hope you ladies enjoy this peek!

Dolce Vita : the sweet life of small business owners working together

I live in a town that is fairly small, yet jam packed with businesses. In a matter of minutes I can get groceries, shoes, toys, home products, home improvement supplies, one quick drive can appear overwhelming. One thing I that NEEDED when we moved here was a good place to get my hair done. I have a lot of hair… even when it’s short, it is thick! So I turned to a friend for a recommendation, Dolce Vita Salon & Spa. Nicole, Jackie and the whole staff won me over. That was 3 years ago.

After I started my business I began chatting with Nicole here and there about being a business owner. Recently Nicole made some improvements to the salon, including opening a make-up room.

The color of the walls, the furniture, decor, I love it! Perfect for a bride, or in the case of the photo above, a high school senior.

One of the things that I have really loved about Dolce Vita, besides getting a haircut that I love,  is their attention to giving quality service and creating an experience for their clients. Those qualities set any small business apart from others in the same profession.

They even know how I take my coffee! 🙂

In addition to these images that will be used in the salon’s redecorating, I am also teaming up with Dolce Vita to offer high school seniors the opportunity to have their hair and/or make-up done at a special rate when they book a senior portrait session with me!

Last month I had the great pleasure of working with Women Aware, an organization that serves and supports victims of domestic violence and those who love them. My friend Patricia, the Assistant Executive Director, was looking for a photographer for the Women Aware awards breakfast. I jumped at the chance to help Trish, she’s an inspiration is so many ways with the work she does, the causes she is passionate about and her love for her family- human and furry 🙂 Once I began reading up about Women Aware, I knew I had jumped wisely! What I didn’t expect was the emotion that the early March morning would bring. I had a small glimpse the night before, receiving the program from Trish to give me a heads up of the plan for the morning. I held myself together fairly well, trying to maintain professional and get all the shots I needed. But certain moments got me… first was hearing from Fran Newman, the mother of Heather Newman (Trapp) killed by her ex- husband in December 2011. He then took his own life leaving their two daughters in Fran’s care. Heather’s story still wrenches my heart and Fran’s strength is unlike anything I have ever seen. It wasn’t until after the breakfast when I was speaking with Heather’s sister when I broke down. The other moment was watching a slideshow of drawings from the kids who live in the safe house, with them singing ‘You Are My Sunshine” playing in the background. As Phyllis Adams, Executive Director of Women Aware explained, the kids sing this song every morning. The hope and joy shown through their pictures is proof of the amazing work being done by Women Aware.

Another portion that I loved was the introduction and distribution of awards for the ‘Blue Bra Society.’ In December, a story was circulated by the Washington Post about an Egyptian woman beaten during a demonstration. The photo shown with the story of the woman revealed a bright blue bra that she wore under her abaya. The blue bra has become a symbol of women’s empowerment and the 2012 inductees were recognized for their efforts to stop violence against women.

Seen below is the cousin of Heather Newman, Ashlee Newman, a Syracuse University student who was inducted into the ‘Blue Bra Society’ for her work in leading a legislative advocacy effort in memory of her cousin.

Just a few more from my life-changing morning with the great people of Women Aware. I’m looking forward to doing more with and for them. Be sure to check out their website, http://www.womenaware.net and if you or someone you know needs their help, the 24-hour hotline is 732-249-4504.

Live.Laugh.Love.

From the moment I walked in the door of the “C” family’s house, I felt like I was home. Faces going past, little one running around and lots of laughter. Morgan bought the session for her mom, Marianne, as a Christmas gift. Marianne apologized for the all the people, the noise… but she had no idea how great her home felt.

Naturally, this handsome little man stole the show and my heart!

So sweet!

The whole crew… thank you!

A Cape May wedding-styled shoot

At the beginning of March I had the opportunity for a weekend getaway with some amazing women from a group called Pursuit 31, from the tri-state area (and DE and VA too). The first time I met with any ‘Pursuit’ women was in December in CT, I wrote about that experience here. Unfortunately I never wrote as much as I truly wanted to about that time. And wow, I just looked back at that and what a terrible re-cap!! Moving forward…

Angelsea Urban from Creative Eye Photography is one of the women from the CT retreat and the only person going into that weekend who I had met before.  She is fun and caring and always has a smile on her face. Angie is also great at bringing people together. She put together this weekend retreat in Cape May thanks to a friend of hers with a rental house. It was like a giant sleepover but with a photo-shoot complete with models, hair/make-up and a pretty venue… all just across the street. Things couldn’t have worked out more perfect!

Grand Colonial – Immaculate Conception School Gala

Last month I had the great pleasure of working with Capturing Precious Time Photography at the Immaculate Conception School 10th Annual Gala. I was excited to go to the Grand Colonial as it has been a few years since I’ve been there and in that time they added on a beautiful ballroom to the already fabulous restaurant.

The tables were already set when we arrived …

and the auction items were set out, awaiting the guests and bidders…

Great auction item – bench made by 6th graders!

Make sure you check out the Grand Colonial’s Ice bar

Love the historic aspect too!

Be sure to check out Jenny’s blog as well… thank you for inviting me along!!

My day

Thanks to some inspiration from a new friend and photographer, Kacey Crawford, I decided to document my day in photos. I figured today was best because otherwise I might put it off. Coming later this week… my recap of an amazing weekend with Kacey and 8 other Christian women & photographers!
